What is pulmonary care?

Pulmonary care or pulmonology refers to the branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the respiratory system, including the thoracic cavity, chest wall, lungs, and upper airways.

Pulmonologists treat a wide spectrum of conditions, from asthma to COPD and shortness of breath.

What are some of the most common pulmonary conditions?

Many people are affected by pulmonary conditions that can cause uncomfortable symptoms.

Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath (dyspnea) is a frightening medical condition that’s often described as an intense tightening in the chest, difficulty breathing, breathlessness, air hunger, or a feeling of suffocation.

Asthma

Asthma is a respiratory condition involving swollen and narrowed airways often due to environmental triggers or irritants. More severe asthma can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack.

Pleuritic pain

Pleuritic pain (pleurisy) is a condition involving inflammation of the pleura membrane — the layer of tissue that lines the inner side of your chest cavity and the layer of tissue that surrounds your lungs.

COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that results in obstructed airflow from the lungs.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis refers to inflammation of the bronchial tubes — the airways that transport air to your lungs. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic.

What does pulmonary care involve?

Pulmonary care can involve a range of testing and treatment methods depending on your health, symptoms, and other factors. Dr. Abad might recommend testing, such as a chest X-ray, a pulmonary function test, or blood work to assess your health.

With a pulmonary function test, you blow into a device called a spirometer that measures how quickly you can exhale air out of your lungs and how much air your lungs can hold.

After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Abad might recommend a number of treatments for your pulmonary condition, including:

  • Medications, such as antibiotics, antivirals, bronchodilators, inhalers, cough medicine, pain relievers, or anti-inflammatories
  • Lifestyle changes, such as nutritional counseling, stress management, or regular appropriate exercise
  • Supplements (usually to lower inflammation, offer immune system support, or restore nutritional deficiencies)

Dr. Abad also recommends other healthy lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation and regulating your sleep schedule so you get plenty of restful sleep. Dr. Abad can also give referrals when necessary, such as to a rheumatologist if he suspects you might have an autoimmune disease.

Dr. Abad creates personalized treatment plans and offers lifelong pulmonary care to keep you as healthy as possible. Schedule an appointment today.
